There’s a particular kind of frustration that comes with an air conditioner giving up in the middle of a heatwave or, just as often, refusing to switch on the one week you actually need heating. It’s rarely convenient, and it’s usually not something you want to leave for “next week.”
What we fix
Aircon faults tend to fall into a handful of patterns, and most of them are more fixable — and less expensive — than people expect once we’ve actually had a look:
- Not cooling, or barely cooling: often a refrigerant leak, a dirty filter or coil restricting airflow, or a compressor that’s struggling.
- Not heating (for reverse-cycle units) : usually a reversing valve or thermostat fault.
- Water leaking or dripping from the indoor unit : almost always a blocked condensate drain, which sounds worse than it is to fix.
- Strange noises or smells : a loose fan blade, a failing motor bearing, or in some cases mould buildup inside the unit.
- Rising electricity bills with no obvious cause : a sign the unit is working harder than it should be, often due to a refrigerant or airflow issue.
- Unit won’t switch on at all : could be anything from a blown fuse to a faulty control board; we test systematically rather than guessing.
